Natascha, me and charidee

Posted on | October 1, 2009 | 5 Comments

Last Monday I was invited to lunch in London to hear about the Pampers-UNICEF “Gift of Life” campaign.  In attendance, amongst others were Irish and UK parent bloggers, UNICEF ambassador and actress Natascha McElhone, UNICEF and Pampers representatives.

What transpired was a very interesting day. Natascha recounted her recent visit to Angola with UNICEF and we heard about UNICEF‘s work there. We also learned about  the Pampers-UNICEF campaign which is now in its fourth year.

The campaign is centred on the “1 Pack =1 Vaccine” message. During this October, November and December, for every pack of Pampers nappies or wipes purchased with the “1 Pack = 1 Life-Saving Vaccine” logo, Pampers will fund UNICEF with 1 tetanus vaccine.

This seems like a no brainer to me.  If you’ve kids you’ll more than likely be buying disposable nappies and you’ll definitely be buying wipes ;-) So why not buy Pampers products and help others whilst you at it? Whilst it sometimes  can be hassle to donate to charity by direct debit, through your bank etc this way couldn’t be easier. You buy the product and Pampers donates to UNICEF.

To be honest, I was pretty ignorant of tetanus in Africa. Its a disease that we only really hear of here in terms of what immunisations to get when travelling abroad. I was unaware of maternal and newborn tetanus which is still a major problem in countries such as Angola. Its preventable and tragically often fatal for an estimated 128,000 mothers and babies each year. UNICEF’s goal is to eliminate maternal and infant tetanus by 2012 through an extensive immunization programme.

Plenty of further information about tetanus, UNICEF and the campaign can be found here on the Pampers website.

So g’wan, g’wan, g’wan,  do your bit and go buy plenty of your Pampers nappies and wipes over the next 3 months.

What a well written post. Thanks for the mention. It was good to see you briefly on the day and to be involved in such a worthwhile cause.

I reckon we’d have saved hundreds of lives over the last 4 years, as indeed the MM household would’ve! :)
Will certainly contribute to a few vaccines in the next 3 months, well done to Pampers for a great and worthy initiative.

Likewise Rosie. Unfortunately the early start + coffee overload combination meant I didn’t get to chat to as many as I’d hoped. Twas a very relaxed and enjoyable day.
Looking forward to keeping up with the news on your blog.

Aye Mike, reckon I’ll be doing my bit in wipes purchases but that you’ll outdo me on the nappy front! Between us we should hit a fair number of vaccines.
