Podcasts and girls’ road trip

Posted on | January 26, 2009 | No Comments

On Saturday Sibéal and I headed to Dublin for a flying visit. The purpose of our trip was to meet baby Aoife, who’s less than a fortnight old and sooooo cute. Congrats again to Teresa and Craig and big bro Kieran.

Though the car journey from Bandon to Dublin is now hugely improved and much shorter with the opening of the numerous town bypasses, it still takes us over 3 hours. I wasn’t in the humour for listening to music to pass the time so decided that downloading some podcasts was in order before I left.

They turned out to be an interesting and diverse mix:

Medical Matters: Euugh,  things you never knew about bed bugs, lice and insects.

Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo: These podcasts are usually good craic. Latest movies and news reviewed. I listened to the Oscar nominations review episode and class reviews of Underworld and Frost/Nixon.

Foodtalk: Caroline Hennessy and Kevin Thornton chat about spices,  seafood and livestock in the three episodes I listened to. Interesting as interviews with suppliers/producers interspersed with discussion between Caroline and Kevin.

Great Lives: Listened to a few episodes of this biography series where a showbiz guest chooses someone they admire from history and this hero is then discussed. Bette Davis, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Tony Hancock were the heroes chosen in these episodes.

TED conference: Listened again to Ken Robinson whose thoughts on education and creativity I love. He’s a great speaker. Also listened to Al Gore’s speech on the climate crisis. Again, a good speaker and some interesting views.

Last but not least was one that I found really interesting. Start the week featured Daniel Tammet who is an author, linguist and describes himself as autistic savant. His description of his abilities how he sees numbers as a landscape was fascinating.  Ben Goldacre always interesting and I like his fortrightness on how science is percieved in the media at the moment. Graham Farmelo talked about his book on Paul Dirac the physicist who shunned publicity who may have been autistic. Sounds like it would be a good read.

As result the journey flew. We had a most excellent trip. Thanks to Paula for the lodgings, and Kieran and family for the fry up in Bray on Sunday morning.

If anyone has any further recommendations for podcasts, I’d appreciate them for the next trip.
